iPad 2 GPS
iPad 2 has GPS capabilities built on what iPad had. It is an improved version and more accurate GPS maps are available on iPad 2 versus iPad.

My recommendation would be to use iPad 2 with its GPS capabilities more often than iPad initial release due to the fact that Apple invested more in the location aware apps and these types of apps will be more popular this and coming years.

iPhone 4 GPS Review
The iPhone 4 came up with the better version of GPS navigator. There are additional features that the iPhone 4 has incorporated which are:
  • Assisted GPS
  • Cellular
  • Wi-Fi
  • Digital compass
There are all location services provided by Apple and implemented in the iPhone 4 Smartphone.

The iPhone 4 provides more value via its location based apps. I would say this is where the most value comes from using the GPS capable iPhone 4. For instance, if you need a double shot of espresso, all you have to do is to type coffee into your location aware map and all nearby coffee shops will pop-up on your screen.

The iPhone 4 has another GPS app that can be very useful while driving which is real time traffic information.

Finally, new feature called "Compass" will tell you what is your coordinates relative to your position. App will show your position while you are rotating with your iPhone 4 GPS enabled Smartphone.

HTC Evo 4G GPS Review
HTC EVO 4G is new Smartphone to use GPS what will go on sale this week. It is also first Smartphone to use WiMAX. HTC Evo runs Android OS or make it Android OS 2.1 (recent version from Google)

HTC EVO main advantage is its 4G support. Only few Smartphone can compare this feature alone.

HTC EVO 4G has built in GPS receiver. There are two GPS maps configurations which you can choose from while activating GPS feature of this phone. One comes from Google called "Google Navigation" and another directly from Spring called "Sprint Navigation"

If you used Android phone before, you'll know how to use Google Navigation. However, we would prefer to use Sprint Navigation app which is more expensive to use (monthly charge apply) but has few more useful features.

You may look at Google Nexus One GPS review on our site for comparison.

TomTom XXL530S Review, Updates
TomTom XXL530S is upgraded version of XL530S with wider screen size which makes it easy on eyes and more comfortable to read your maps with the POI and other details that come handy while on the road. This GPS device comes with US and Canada maps which can be updated online via their site or purchased separately for any other country that you may be interested in.

TomTom XXL530S is following trend of have 3D maps installed on the dives. This is nothing new as Garmin and other competitors started to provide maps since the beginning of 2009. It is easy to get oriented with 3D maps but I would not pay premium if TomTom would have charged for it. In fact, sometimes 2D maps do just fine for me.

It is not very difficult to mount this device even though many versions of TomTom had issues with the standard mount that comes with it. Many people on this site forum as well as on other forums brought it as one of the weaknesses of all recent TomTom devices. I guess TomTom paid attention and XXL530S comes with built-in mount that you can fold into the device.

Other notable features of TomTom XXL530S are

  • Spoken Street Names
  • IQ Routes
  • 5-Inch Touchscreen
  • millions of points of interest
  • EasyPort Mount
We are working on official review of this device and will uploading our TomTom Review section.

GPS Smartphones
It is becoming more and more widespread to use your smartphones as GPS Devices. Many people predict that stand alone GPS device is no longer a viable solution to your need. Many smartphone companies such as HTC, Apple, RIM are jumping into GPS space with advanced devices and to some extent pure GPS players are fighting back with their own versions of GPS capable smartphones.

Stock prices of many GPS companies have been down despite market upturn and it leads to believe that these companies are loosing out to their smartphone producers.

Time will tell who will be the winner or of market share will be divided and we are interested in following this new trend. We'll be updating our GPS Phone section more often to reflect changing nature of the GPS space. Here is a list of recent additions to this section.

TomTom XXL 540S review
It has been always a challenge to get all the important maps on GPS device especially if you travel abroad. It was very good for GPS producing companies to charge customer for any additional maps that are being installed on their GPS devices. However, this approach is changing with the arrival of new TomTom GPS model called XXL 540S. This device comes pre-loaded with all the important GPS maps for three major regions: USA, Canada, and Europe.

This was possible to better pricing for the hardware, more specifically memory cost. TomTom XXL 540S comes with 4GB Hard Drive that allows to held as much information as required for all the available charts.

TomTom XXL 540S will be available in stores earlier next year but may hit store shelves as soon as December before Christmas arrives and I would be looking for it.

I am planning to add to this device to our TomTom Review Section covering all of the TomTom GPS devices

The official Title for the Android GPS is Google Maps Navigation and it is capable of all the standard GPS operations that you see on TomTom, Gramin and other manufacturers of GPS devices. The main advantage of Android GPS is its mapping capabilities that utilizes Google Maps technology.

You can install GPS application without having Android by downloading software directly from the Google.com website at Google GPS Download page.

The problem comes with the screen sharpnest. It does not have same capabilities as iphone when it comes to screen sharpness and effects. Otherwise, it is a good choice for HTC followers and I rcommend buying it if GPS is part of the feature that you are looking for in HTC smart phones.

Top GPS Navigation tips
GPS Navigator downloads information about GPS satellites when you use your GPS Navigator for the first time. It normally takes up to 2 min depending on your device. The reason it takes time is that information is being downloaded into your device. You can speed up this initial start-up of you leave your GPS Device motionless for about half an hour. It will load this information and will acquire satellite signals also known as TTFF much faster next time you use your GPS portable.

Another good tip will help you to prevent your GPS navigator from being stolen. There are three most common mistakes GPS owner makes and if you avoid making it you'll be able to deter people from stealing your device.

  • Don't leave your unit in the car
  • Remove the suction cup from your car and wipe out windshield
  • Get a friction mount for your car, it does not leave any marks and never fall down like some of the suction cups.

Update your GPS Navigator firmware often. This is one of those things that people normally don't do and loose out on more efficient navigation and routs. Companies are always updating and releasing new maps, new algorithms for navigating and new points of interest. It is important to update your GPS Navigator with firmware as often as you can especially if you don't use it often.

Plan your trip on computer and then upload to GPS. It is easier to plan your trip using Google Map and then simply upload to your GPS via "Send to GPS" command.

Top 10 GPS Devices
Top 10 GPS Devices I was looking around web and found this little post about Top 10 GPS Devices which is quite complete in my point of view. It presents Top GPS Devices in each category and does good job and providing information. We count on Consumer Report for Top 10 and we'll provide our own subjective input into what we think about their top 10 and it isn’t biased in any way.

Top 10 GPS

I agree for the most part with the rating presented on this site, but I disagree on the location of each GSP Device within this list. I think Garmin GPS Devices should take position 1 to 6 and then all others.

There is one issue that we identified with the Magellan Maestro GPS Devices. We can’t fully consider it amongst Top 10 due to a recent sell-off of its consumer division to a different company. As a result, we are not sure about level of support this new company will provide for 4370 and 4250 GPS Devices.

It is important to review time to time new GPS devices by major producers such as (Garmin, Magellan, Navigon, Mio and TomTom) and check these GPS navigators for new set of functionality and capabilities. As a result, we are planning to update Top 10 GPS every time there is new GPS device is on the market.

Oregon 400t is 3 inch in diagonal with touchscreen display. One of the main features that Oregon 400t poses is its durability and toughness. It is designed to be waterproof, sand and dirt resistant. It’s another nice device from Garmin.
